How to Use Color Psychology in Digital Design

Have you been handling the creation of your Instagram posts and all other digital marketing material? Before you go ahead and edit the next batch of content let's take a more in-depth look at the psychology of colors so that you learn how to use them when crafting your own marketing message.

 

 

You may be wondering, why should you care? Well studies show that people make a subconscious judgment about a product within 90 seconds of the initial viewing. Up to 90% of that assessment is based on color alone.

 

The keyword here is subconscious. Did you know that colors have qualities that can influence certain emotions in people? It's true❕🎨 ⁣

Though it may not be obvious in our everyday life, color can influence perception and often predict human behavior. While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, most colors have a universal meaning. ⁣

For example:⁣

✘ Warm colors tend to evoke emotions raging from warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility (when you use them with specific intent). 

✘ Cool colors, or colors on the blue spectrum are often described as calm but can also evoke feelings of indifference or sadness. ⁣

It was also observed in a study that 53 % of buyers focus on visual appearance, and close to 85% claim color is a primary reason when they commit to buy. 

 

How to use color psychology when creating your content? 

 

Your choice of color scheme can have a huge impact on the type of client you attract

 

  • Use color to set the mood of the message

 

Use light red to communicate joy and love. Teal signifies emotional health and stability while light blue represents heath. Light purple brings to mind ideas of softness and we tend to associate dark yellow with happiness, joy and freshness. Orange represents health and desire, pale browns for calm and purity. Finally, white stands for clarity and openness while black for power, elegance and mystery. 

 

  • Use color contrast to influence visual hierarchy. 

 

It is proven that bright colors are more likely to draw attention over muted ones. You can also play with contrast in your design as dramatically contrasted colors will catch the eye easily

 

  • Use color to reinforce your brand

 

The more you use your brand colors, the more your target audience will associate your content with your brand, in turn increasing your influence.

 

Take note of how consumers are affected by different colors and use that knowledge to your advantage when creating your brand. Do you know what colors are catching the eye of your target market? 👀
